I just finished a book "The Shack". It is a fiction book but is a vivid image of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and their perfect relationship. The story itself is a tragedy, but it is one of those that will turn the "noise" of a 2 year old into an orchestra in perfect harmony. I actually have it as an audio book. If you are trying to find something to retreat into for a weekend with yourself to reset, I recommend it. Really.

We left SC on 12-31 when it was blue skies and 60/70s and in a short 16 hour drive pulled into the driveway at 20 cold, windy degrees. I enjoyed those long lazy days pushing the kids in the tree swing, watching them chase the cats around the yard, and strolling around the pecan trees picking up my father's gold of $7/pound.

Living in those moments as a father living far away from family becomes something suspended in time in which it seems you have to make a choice to move forward into the life God has called you or retreat into something familiar, warm, and comfortable. As we were packing the car and moving toward the car, my youngest 6 year old cried huge tears not wanting to leave Nan and Grandpa. They have always been sad to part ways with the grandparents, but this was extraordinary. I have always been concerned that living so far away that my kids would not benefit from the enormous love and wisdom that Godly grandparents can provide. Thank you God for miles not mattering where your love is concerned.

Of course, we had to get in the car and go. Danielle and I comforted her as parents do with "we'll see them again soon" and that sort of thing. I then began my journey with the author of "The Shack" on the Interstates across our country. We celebrated the new year on the road in 2 time zones. I drove through the night while my kids sleep in the back. Meanwhile, God was busy giving me lessons through a great fiction book. One of those things as I look "back" at your backyard picture is that He is the God of now. He has encouraged me that while I imagine the "could be" or "what if" scenarios, they do not compare to what is planned for me and all of us if we just live in right relationship with Him here and now.

So, look "back"-yard a little longer to be thankful for the great love He gave through parents and loved ones back home, but let's all join Him back in the now to live out the exciting journey prepared just for us at just this time. I look so forward to praising Him with all of you this year.
